Original trailer for the 1979 science fiction horror film ALIEN by Ridley Scott

It’s interesting and fun to go back and watch older original trailers for some of our favorite movies. This week’s retro trailer is for Ridley Scottis the classic 1979 horror thriller Alien.

It’s funny to think about what audiences in the late 1970s thought when they sat in theaters watching this trailer for the first time. They had no idea how this movie would change things.

The story follows the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo, who respond to a distress signal on a distant planet. After investigating, they discover an abandoned alien spaceship and a chamber full of mysterious eggs. One of the crew members, Kane, becomes the unwitting host of a parasitic extraterrestrial creature that later evolves into the iconic and terrifying Xenomorph.

As the crew grapples with a deadly threat aboard the ship, a tense atmosphere of isolation, suspense and claustrophobia is created, leading to a relentless battle for survival against an adversary as cunning as it is deadly.

Alien is celebrated for its extraordinary blend of horror and science fiction, characterized by innovative visual effects, atmospheric tension and otherworldly creature designs by H.R. Giger. The film’s success lies not only in its ability to terrify audiences, but also in subverting traditional gender roles, with Sigourney Weaver’s character, Ellen Ripley, emerging as a resilient and resourceful heroine.
