Edgar Wright he was once offered the opportunity to direct Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, but ultimately rejected the offer. During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Wright explained why she chose not to direct the film, and it just came down to her schedule. Time was up.
He explained: “It was literally like a matter of timing. To do that, I wouldn’t have to do press for Scott Pilgrim.” He went on to say that he doesn’t regret missing out on the concert, saying:
“Sometimes, if you love a show, you almost don’t want to be the thing that could ruin everything, you know what I mean? I love the Mission: Impossible series. I don’t regret passing it on because Brad Bird’s movie was damn great. And I loved it. I was there on opening day to see it and I never sat there thinking, “I could have done that.” I was thinking, “This is awesome.” It’s happened to me several times in my career when I’ve been asked to do episodes of my favorite TV shows. Part of me, deep in my head, is thinking, ‘This show existed really well without me for so long, so it won’t die without me.'”
I loved what Brad Bird done with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and while I’m sure Wright would have made a fun film, I couldn’t be happier with what Bird made. I actually would have liked to see Bird direct more! But once Christopher McQuarrie AND Tom Cruise get along, it just wasn’t going to happen.
The film follows the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) team as they rebel after being implicated in a devastating terrorist attack on the Kremlin. With their renegade organization, Ethan Hunt and his team, including new members, played Jeremy Renner AND Paola Pattonmust prevent a global catastrophe caused by a nuclear extremist named Kurt Hendricks.
Did you like it Ghost Protocol? Would you have liked to see Wright direct it?
