We recently got our first real look at Amazon’s upcoming adaptation of the series Fallwhich was developed by Westworld‘S Jonathan Nolan AND Lisa Joy. It looks like it will be a good series set in the gaming world, but tells a completely new original story.
Regardless of the new story, Todd Howardthe director of Fallout 3 AND Fallout 4 and executive producer Bethesda Game Studios, which developed the franchise, confirms that the series will have the same twisted sense of humor that fans love about the game.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, Howard said, “We had a lot of conversations about the style of humor, the level of violence, the style of violence. Look, Fallout can be very dramatic and dark and post-apocalyptic, but you have to wink… I think they threaded that needle really well in the TV show.
One of these little winks comes from “Vault Boy,” the cartoon who perpetually winks with a giant smile and thumbs-up sign. This is the logo of the Vault Dwellers, where the protagonist of the series, Lucy, resides.
This “Vault Boy” iconography was intended as “an ironic and tone-deaf contrast to the harsh existence of those who resist on the surface.” It is explained that Nolan and Joy wanted to argue that “biting comedy was the key to making the world work as a series.”
It was also revealed that Vault Boy will be getting an origin story, and of that, Howard said, “It’s something they came up with and it’s really clever.” Obviously he won’t reveal any details about the plot, but it will be interesting to see!
Howard went on to confirm that everything that happens in this series is canon and officially part of Fallout lore. He said: “We look at what’s happening on the show as canon. This is nice when someone else looks at your work and then translates it in some way. I kind of thought, ‘Ah, why didn’t we do that?'”
The story centers on Lucy (Ella Purnell), who “has lived his entire life inside a dungeon, where every need and desire has been satisfied while generations upon generations await the day when it is safe to reemerge”.
It is explained that “When a crisis forces Lucy to venture up there on a rescue mission, she discovers that the planet above remains a hellish landscape teeming with giant insects, voracious mutant animal ‘abominations’, and a human population of tanned miscreants who follow good manners , the morals and hygiene of the gunslinger Old West resemble Downton Abbey… The games are about the culture of division and the haves and have-nots that, unfortunately, have become increasingly acute in this country and around the world in recent decades ” Nolan tells Vanity Fair for this exclusive first look.
Fall the release is scheduled for April 12, 2024.
