James Cameron offers an update on AVATAR 3 saying it’s in “frantic” post-production

James Cameron offered a brief update on Avatara3 saying it’s a “very hectic” post-production schedule expected to last two years. During an interview with New Zealand Public Broadcast’s TVNZ, he said:

“We’re in a very busy two-year post-production phase right now, so it’s going to be Christmas [2025].”

We haven’t had any updates on this project in a while, so this is just a little reminder that the film is still in development and coming. Avatar: The Way of Water was a huge success for Cameron, and I imagine this third film will be another huge success for everyone involved.

While Avatara3 was shot, Cameron previously said he would return and tinker some more, saying: “I’ll take a moment when the dust clears to evaluate what people loved and what they responded to the most. ” in this current version, and then I might go back and tinker around a bit [with ‘Avatar 3’]. We might go back and do a couple of moments here and there. It won’t be radical, but maybe refine it a little to emphasize what people are responding to.”

We don’t know the film’s title or synopsis yet, but Cameron gave us an idea of who the film will focus on, saying, “Lo’ak has really emerged as a character that people have connected with. So I could find ways to… he’s already the narrator. I’m giving something away here, but that’s okay. I think it might be intriguing for people to think about what’s going to happen. Jake was our voice-over narrator for the first and second films, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films. We see it through the eyes of a different character. The third film is seen through Lo’ak’s eyes.”

Cameron also teased the fire element of the third film and revealed that two new cultures would be introduced, saying: “Fire has a symbolic purpose in the film and there is a culture that specifically revolves around that concept. That’s probably saying too much as we speak.”

Cameron previously talked a bit about the depiction of fire Avatara3, saying: “Showing different cultures than I’ve already shown. Fire will be represented by the “People of the Ash”. I want to reveal the Na’vi from another angle because, for the moment, I have only shown their positive sides. In the early films there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatara3we will have the opposite.”

The director then revealed that two more new cultures will be introduced in the next film, saying: “You will encounter two completely new cultures in the next film. We met the Omaticaya, we met the Metkayina, and you’ll meet two new cultures in the next movie, and kind of wander a little more freely in the world of Pandora in different places.

Avatara3 will be released in theaters on December 20, 2024.
