This has been reported Christopher Nolan is in talks to direct the next two James Bond movie. The report states that EON and Amazon “are pushing for Nolan and that he is OK in principle unless his need for creative freedom is met.”
According to rumors, EON is trying to do a complete reboot of the franchise for the modern era and they want Nolan to adapt some of the classics Ian Fleming novels, “in period settings, which are close to the source material”. The ultimate goal is for Nolan to make three Bond films and have him on board as an executive producer on the franchise moving forward.
So, what does Nolan have to say about this relationship? In an interview with the Associated Press he was asked about it and said:
“NO. Unfortunately these rumors are not true, but I am very excited that the strike is over and we can all get back to work.”
Now, even if the rumors are true, he won’t come out and say they are because of any NDAs he had to sign. Furthermore, if he said something like “I can’t talk about it”, fans would read between the lines and assume that if he can’t talk about it he must be involved. So, the only answer he could really give is no.
I really hope that Nolan actually jumps on board the James Bond franchise to launch the next iteration of films. But even if he doesn’t, he will still make great films.
Nolan has been very vocal about wanting to direct a James Bond film, previously saying: “It would be an extraordinary privilege to do one. At the same time, when you play a character like that, you work with a particular set of constraints. It has to be the right time in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really dig into something within the appropriate boundaries because you never want to go through something like that and do it wrong.”
Nolan had already said a few years ago that he had spoken to the producers of the Bond franchise, saying: “I spoke to the producers Barbara Broccoli AND Michael G. Wilson in the years. I love the character deeply and am always excited to see what they do with him. Maybe one day it would work. You should be needed, if you know what I mean. He must need to be reinvented; he must need you. And they get along very well.”
