Disney is considering developing traditional 2D animated films again

Disney and Pixar Animation Studios have spent years developing CGI animated films and I have to say, I miss traditional hand-drawn 2D animation. I think Disney’s last 2D traditional animated film The Princess and the Frog in 2009.

Well, according to the co-director of the next Disney Animation film, Wish, Disney is considering making 2D animated films again. Although Wish is CGI/3D animated, the style is very much inspired by the 2D animated films that came before it.

During an interview with The Direct, director Chris Buck was asked if Disney would make 2D animated films again and shared that the studio would “absolutely” consider including 2D animation in their future films. He explained:

“I think, absolutely. This film was inspired, of course, by legacy and 2D animation. And the look has a bit of a 2D feel with the lines on the characters. We carried out the first tests with Star in 2D. But yeah, I think we’ll continue to explore.

When it comes to the unique style of WishBuck explained how the film was the product of an ever-evolving style:

“The nice thing is that we started with some shorts, ‘Paperman,’ ‘Feast’ and ‘Far From the Tree’ that kind of explored the look that we adapted, and we continued to evolve. We’ve never done it in full before. So it was going to be a challenge. I would say absolutely. You just don’t know what the next thing will be.

There’s no word on whether any 2D animated films are currently in development, but it would be nice to see Disney make a traditional animated film again and return to its roots.

When it comes to Wish, the story takes place in a world called Rosas, a fairytale kingdom of wishes. It is a “fantastic land located off the coast of the Iberian Peninsula. People come from all over to make their wishes to a magical king who promises to grant their deepest wishes one day. Only he can decide which wishes will come true and when.”

The main character of the story is Asha (Ariana De Bose), “a quick-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is granted by a cosmic force: a small sphere of limitless energy called the Star.” It is explained that “Together, Asha and Star face a formidable enemy, the ruler of Rosas, King Magnificent, to save his community and prove that when the will of a courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wonderful things can happen “. .”

Wish will only be released in theaters on November 22, 2023.
