David Harbor talks about his character Eric Frankenstein in the upcoming DC TV series CREATURE COMMANDOS

Davide Porto kicked his career into high gear when he played the role of Hopper in the hit Netflix series Stranger thingsthen he starred in the Marvel superhero film Black Widowwhich will see a sequel in 2025 called Lightningbut before that happens, Harbor will move to the DC Universe, where he will voice the role of Eric Frankenstein in the series adaptation of Commando of creatures.

The show was created by James Gunnand Harbor is joined by the talented cast it includes Sean Gunn as Weasel and GI Robot, Franco Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova in the role of Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma in the role of the Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller, and Steve Agee reprising his role as John Economos from Peacemaker.

On the red carpet for a recent event, io9 got to talk to Harbor about the upcoming role, and he discussed how the version of Frankenstein he’s playing is different from his role as the character in Netflix’s offbeat comedy hidden gem, Frankenstein’s Monster Frankenstein’s Monster (2019). Harbor discussed how the two takes, while both comical, stand out, saying:

“Oh yeah. No, it’s very different. I mean, it’s the mind of James Gunn, so it’s whimsical and strange, but also full of depth and complexity,” he shared, describing why he’s drawn to the literary legend of Mary Shelley. “The most interesting thing to me about Frankenstein’s monster in general is that he was created to be this erudite, intellectual, romantic, brilliant person, and he ends up being a monster. I mean, that complexity can create some pretty mature comedy and even pathos: a guy who sees himself as one thing, is seen by others as something very different. That’s the biggest, most mysterious way I can say it, because all I know is that the scripts are really good. What we recorded is truly fantastic. I’ve seen the drawings, James is a genius. I think he’s going to be really fun and exciting, and he’s going to open up a whole new door into the DC Universe of how these characters are going to occupy the world. I like the concept of live action and cartoon back and forth.

When asked if he’s ready to don the full Frankenstein look for live action, Harbor laughed, replying:

“I mean, I don’t know how they do it nowadays. It looks like Mark Ruffalo put dots on his face for Hulk. But I don’t know how they will do it.”

When it was suggested that Gunn might go with classic monster prosthetics, the former Hellboy said he’d like that.

“I’ve worn prosthetics in movies before, I’m definitely okay with that. I love telling great stories that people love. I’m just happy to get back to work.”

Commando of creatures will air on Max in 2024.
