Focus Features has set a theatrical release date of March 22 The American Association of Magical Negroesa satirical comedy marking the feature film debut of Kobi Libii starring Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), David Alan Grier (in prep The color purple), and more.
Focus is distributing the picture in the US, while Universal Pictures International is handling international distribution. Mark Wahlberg’s pic opens on the 22nd from Lionsgate Arthur the King. The film tells the story of a young man, Aren, who is recruited into a secret society of magical black people who dedicate their lives to an extremely important cause: making life easier for white people.
The cast is completed by An-Li Bogan (To Yang), Drew Tarver (The other two), Michaela Watkins (You hurt my feelings), Rupert Freund (Asteroid city) and Nicole Byer (Success!). Pic’s producers included Julia Lebedev and Eddie Vaisman of Sight Unseen, as well as Angel Lopez and Libii.
