MGM+ is developing a true crime docuseries based on the author Michael Connellythe Audible podcast series, The Wonderland Murders and the Secret History of Hollywood. The TV series hasn’t been given a title yet, but we know it will be directed by Alison Ellwood (Sounds of San Francisco, Laurel Canyon), and will be a four-part docuseries examining the infamous Wonderland murder case that occurred in 1980s Los Angeles, California.
The case revolves around an incident in which four people were found in a suburban Laurel Canyon home on Wonderland Avenue and a high-profile trial was launched as a result.
The synopsis of the podcast reads:
“Through explosive, in-depth reporting, new developments, rare archival footage, and the vital testimony of ‘missing witness’ Scott Thorson (best known as Liberace’s fiancé and writer of the short story Behind the Candelabra), Wonderland Murders will delve into a gruesome crime which has captured the public imagination for nearly half a century, and tells a larger story about Los Angeles, the American dream, and when justice works – and doesn’t.”
The series was originally released exclusively on Audible as a limited documentary podcast series, with MGM noting that audiences have listened to it for more than 150,000 hours in total.
Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said of the project:
“Wonderland Murders joins MGM+’s growing stable of smart, insightful and thought-provoking true-crime docuseries. Michael Connelly is a renowned and tenacious crime writer, and Alison Ellwood is a visionary filmmaker, so there’s no better team to explore one of Hollywood’s most famous crimes.
This looks like a fascinating docuseries for true crime fans. I know I’ll be tuning in. We’ll let you know when the show has a streaming release date.
