The true end of the radical animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem featured the classic villain Shredder coming into the story. While he wasn’t a main villain in the first film, the sequel is said to be a “villain-forward” film that will focus on Shredder.
Director Jeff Rowe recently spoke with Collider about the sequel and said that Shredder will have a major role in the upcoming film:
“Shredder is just an amazing character. He is an iconic, classic, beloved character. He’s like the Joker. You know who he is, even if you’re not a fan of the source material. I think we definitely want to make a movie about the bad guy. We’re currently trying to make decisions about that, but those decisions for us as filmmakers will always come from what tells the best story, particularly about our main characters, the Turtles.
The director’s reference to the world of Batman is not the first time he has compared Shredder to it. The director had already teased Shredder’s involvement, saying: “We’ll do it as the Dark Knight.” He went on to say that he would 100% love to develop a sequel and shared, “When you grow up and gain confidence as a teenager, then face an enemy that is three times scarier than anything you could imagine.” never seen before, it’s interesting and dramatic.”
Batman obviously has a strong influence in this TMNT film franchise. In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, after years spent sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon run into trouble when an army of mutants is unleashed on them.
Speaking previously about the tone of the film, Rowe revealed the vibe they were going for, saying: “We wanted it to be like Stand by Me AND Lady Bird. But, you know, with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They nailed it and I can’t wait to see how they handle Shredder in the sequel!
