Shawn Levythe director of Free boy, Deadpool 3AND Stranger thingsis also currently developing a Star Wars film for Lucasfilm. This is actually something the director is incredibly excited about, and as of now, there are no real details about the project to share. But the director was recently asked in an interview with Variety what he will do differently with the franchise than has already been done in the past. His response to that question was:
“When Kathy Kennedy asked me to make a Star Wars movie, her main mandate to me was ‘I want a Shawn Levy movie.’ I want a story and a tone that reflects you and your tastes and what you bring to your films, with a “Star Wars” story. So I felt extremely empowered. We are at the beginning, unfortunately, because the development process was abruptly interrupted [due to the WGA strike]but I feel very empowered to trust my instincts in developing this story and this film.
The director was then asked if Deadpool 3 it was a good practice for the Star Wars film he is making, to which he responded:
“The experience I’m currently having with Marvel on Deadpool is showing me firsthand that it’s really possible to feel empowered and personal in making a film within a universe that is bigger than any other film. My Deadpool movie is turning out exactly like Ryan [Reynolds] and I had hoped so when we started. So I approach the development of my Star Wars film with the same optimism and confidence that my instincts will lead the way.”
When asked about his friendship with Adam Driver and whether his Star Wars the film could be a prequel Episode VII: The Force Awakens that would see Kylo Ren return for another story, Levy said:
“Your words, not mine! As you know Adam is a friend of mine and I have always been a huge fan of Kylo Ren. But no comment.”
I’ll say no. I think Levy will do something different than that. I also don’t think there’s really any fan interest in seeing another one Star Wars movie with Kylo Ren. One thing is for sure, Levy is excited to make a Star Wars film and previously shared:
“If, when I was directing Big Fat Liar, you had told me that one day I would be working on the biggest TV show in the world and that I would be directing Marvel and Star Wars, I would have said, ‘You’re a f**king nut. ‘ But it’s truly thrilling and the kind of big-canvas storytelling I’ve always dreamed of making.
“I was lucky because, ironically, it all started with Night at the Museum where you’re really building a world and incorporating comedy and heart. And you and I talked a lot, that’s exactly what I tried to do with Free Guy and Adam Project. And so getting calls from both Marvel and Lucasfilm, it’s really rewarding. Because I’ve been doing this for a while and these are calls I was really hoping to get one day. And the fact that it’s all coming together now and that these are going to be the next few years of my life is really… I’m just excited. I have no deeper words than that. I’m happy and excited about this every day.”
Over the years, Lucasfilm has announced several Star Wars films with connected directors that have yet to get anywhere. Levy is well aware of this, but he also explained his attitude towards the whole matter as follows:
“I have this golden ticket to a galaxy far away and I will dedicate myself to developing a script that will give me the privilege of making this film. I don’t get attached to things because it looks good in a commercial ad. I get attached to the things I intend to accomplish. And you better believe I won’t waste this juiciest opportunity. I’ll work my ass off. But first I had to get busy making Deadpool. So it’s definitely long-term planning, but I want to be one of the films that gets to the starting line because these are rare opportunities and I want to make the most of them.”
It will be interesting and fun to see what kind Star Wars film that Levy ends up making. It’ll be a while before we actually get to see it, but it’s something he’s currently actively working on, so this could very well be one of many Star Wars film projects that actually get made.
