James Wan talks about AQUAMAN 2 and teases its “very retro, 60s horror look”

It will be really interesting to see what happens with the Warner Bros. release. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in theatres. Many people think it will be a box office success, while others say it could turn out to be a bigger success than people expect. Only time will tell.

Whatever the outcome, director James Wan has decided to make a sequel that he hopes fans will like, and with the Aquaman franchise, took things to a wacky level. While speaking with Empire Magazine about the upcoming sequel, Wan talked a bit about the tone of the film and how he was inspired by the stop-motion creatures created by Ray Harryhausenalong with Euro-horror films such as the 1965 film The planet of vampires. He explained:

“There was a horror element in the first film, but this second one definitely has more of it. This became the foundation of the design. The Lost Kingdom has a very retro, 60s horror feel to it. We have this huge action set piece where Arthur and Orm fight [Black Manta’s] henchmen who use the Octobot, this mechanical squid. It was really fun to shoot.”

It is explained that fans can expect creepy mechanical creatures with an “old school science fiction and horror” feel. I like what Wan is trying to do with the style and tone! It’s really cool and fun! The question is: will the creative team actually tell a good story?

The director also says that he always wanted to make a “buddy comedy” film, and Aquaman 2 allowed him to do it Jason MomoaArthur Curry teams up with his brother Orm, played by Patrick Wilson. Wan mentioned Tango and cash as another inspiration for the film. Wan also compared the characters to Will Smith AND Tommy Lee Jones in the first Men in blacksaying, “Like Tommy, Patrick plays dry, but very funny.”

In the film, “Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to defeat Aquaman once and for all,” the official synopsis of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. law. “This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever, as he wields the power of the mythical Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former king of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must put aside their differences to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family and the world from irreversible destruction.

The film is also the protagonist Amber heard like Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the role of Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanta, Dolph Lundgren as king Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.

Warner Bros. will release the film in theaters on December 20.
