George A. Romerothe classic zombie horror film Dawn of the Dead is returning to the big screen for the film’s 45th anniversary this Halloween season!

The 1978 horror film was the second installment in Romero’s Living Dead series. The plot follows a group of survivors, consisting of two television station employees and two SWAT team members, who take refuge in a shopping mall during a nationwide zombie outbreak. In an effort to transform the mall into a sustainable sanctuary, they must not only fend off the ever-growing horde of zombies, but also face the threat posed by a hostile biker gang. The film also delves into the interpersonal dynamics of the group and the psychological cost of the apocalypse.

What makes Dawn of the Dead such a beautiful film is its commentary on society. Beyond the overt horror of the undead, the film offers a critique of consumerism, with the mall serving as a metaphor. The zombies, driven by a base instinct, are drawn to the mall, not out of a need for sustenance but out of a residual, senseless impulse from their past lives. This highlights the emptiness of consumer culture and the insatiable human desire for more.

So, obviously, the film’s combination of blood, suspense, and dark humor, along with its well-developed characters, allows for a narrative depth that fans have enjoyed for years.

Exclusively from Regal, Dawn of the Dead returns to theaters on October 27th! For tickets click here.
