The theatrical release of Taylor Swift’S The Turn of the Ages was a monster success at the box office and has already become the highest-grossing concert film of all time with over $123.5 million.
Everyone notices it, including you Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan who believes Swift is teaching Hollywood Studios a lesson. During a recent discussion at the City University of New York, Nolan spoke about Swift approaching AMC Theaters directly to distribute her film, and that this should lead studios to move away from the traditional distribution model. He explained:
“Taylor Swift is going to screen the studios, because her concert film is not being distributed by the studios, but by a theater owner, AMC, and it will make a huge amount of money, and that’s the point, [theatrical exhibition is] a format and a way of seeing things and sharing stories or sharing experiences that is incredibly valuable. What if [the studios] I don’t want it, someone else will. So that’s really the truth.”
Yes, he makes some good points there. While there have been concert films released before, of course, we’ve never seen anything like what Taylor Swift brought with her The Turn of the Ages. If the studios aren’t paying attention, you know other music artists are! This is a whole new income stream, and it’s something that I think people will start to take advantage of.
Leave it to Taylor Swift to show the entertainment industry what’s possible.
