Ridley Scott Saw Fede Alvarez’s ALIEN: ROMULUS and Says ‘It’s Damn Awesome’

Director Fede Alvarez screened his film Alien, Alien: RomulusFor Alien director Ridley Scott, and shared the legendary director’s reaction that he didn’t expect. Scott’s reaction to the film is sure to get fans excited for what this film will offer.

Alien: Romulus is a stand-alone story in the alien universe and follows a “group of young people on a distant world who find themselves confronted by the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Alvarez shared his experience screening the film for Scott during a panel with Guillermo del Toro during this year’s DGA Latino Summit. Scott is said to have a famous reputation for being a harsh critic of those who seek to continue his works, so as you might expect, Alvarez was nervous about showing him his film. He said:

“I wanted him to see it before anyone else. And everyone made me realize that Ridley is really tough. He’s really tough, especially if it has anything to do with his movies. He was really tough on Blade Runner 2049, which I thought it was a masterpiece, and he had some problems because it’s really hard for him because it’s his job. I asked him about the new Top Gun and he said “meh”. I’m like, “What are you talking about?” And he said: ‘My brother’s was original and this is like huh.’ He really respected him, but you could see how tough he was. So I thought, ‘There’s no way I can win this.'”

But Alvarez ended up impressing Scott with his film, which is incredibly surprising. Alverez said, “I wanted to go there, sit at a table, look at him and understand him. Even if he said, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to be in front of him and look him in the eyes. I didn’t want to get an e- email that said ‘Ridley says…'” He then shared Scott’s reaction:

“He walked into the room and said, ‘Faith, what can I say? This is damn amazing. For me it was like… My family knows it was one of the best times of my life having a teacher.” like him, who I admired so much, even just watching a film that I had made, but especially something like that… and talking to me for an hour about what he liked. One of the best compliments he said was: ‘The dialogue is fantastic. Are you the writer?’ YES!”

It’s really exciting to hear and gives me hope that we’ll actually get a great new Alien movie! This film is “unrelated” to the previous films. This story is set in another corner of the universe. Alvarez’s initial pitch was said to be a “really good story with a lot of characters you’ve never seen before”.

Movie stars Cailee Spaeny AND Isabela Mercede and they are united by David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and bones), Spike Fearn (After sun) and newcomer Aileen Wu.
