This summer, Paramount+ revealed that they would be canceling their animated series Star Trek: Prodigy after just one season. The second season was made, but was not released by the streamer, much to the disappointment of fans. But Netflix has stepped in to save the day, announcing that it will take over the series, releasing its first season later this year and the never-before-seen Season 2 in 2024.
A statement from executive producer Alex Kurtzman and co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman reads:
“Thank you to our incredible fans of Star Trek: Prodigy, who have supported not just a show, but a community that has always been united by the belief that we can build a better future together. We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on season two and we can’t wait to share it with amazing fans around the world.”
According to its official plot, the younger animated series “follows a diverse group of young aliens who must figure out how to work together as they navigate a larger galaxy, searching for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing of the ship they have commandeered – the first in the history of the Star Trek franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.
Includes the main voice cast from Star Trek: Prodigy Kate Mulgrew as Admiral Janeway, Brett Gray in the role of Dal, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui like Rok-Tahk, Angus Imrie like Zero, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, Giovanni Nobile in the role of The Diviner and Jimmi Simpson as Drednok.
Recurring entries include Daveed Diggs as Commander Tysess, Jameela Jamil as Ensign Asencia, Jason Alexander in the role of Doctor Noum, Roberto Beltran as Captain Chakotay and Billy Campbell as Thadiun Okona.
