Warner Bros. Pictures has released a brand new trailer for the upcoming musical film adaptation of The color purple. This film tells the story of the “extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share an unbreakable bond.”
The film is based on a 1982 novel by Alice Walker and the musical theater show. The story centers on Celie, a black Southern woman in the early 1900s who is abused by her father and husband. She involves the lifelong struggles of an African American woman living in the South during this era.
Steven Spielberg he directed the original film adaptation in 1985, in which he starred Oprah Winfrey. Both Spielberg and Winfrey are executive producers on this new project, directed by Blitz Bazawule (Black is King, Kojo’s Burial).
The color purple stars Taraji P. Henson (What men want, Hidden Figures), Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker, Orange Is the New Black), Colman Domingo (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fear the Walking Dead), Corey Hawkins (In the highlands, BlacKkKlansman), HIS (Judas and the Black Messiah, Beauty and the Beast: a thirtieth celebration), Halle Bailey (The Little Mermaid, now an adult), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard, If Beale Street Could Talk), AND Barrino fantasy in his major film debut.
The screenplay is by Mark Gardley (Waitress, The Chi) and the music and lyrics were written by Brenda Russell, Allee WillisAND Stephen Bray.
The film will be released in theaters on December 25th.
