Marvel Studios has finally realized that they’ve been mismanaging their TV division and are in the process of revamping how they do things. Marvel has had some successes and failures with the shows they’ve developed, but they’ve done things unconventionally when it comes to their shows and that’s caused them some headaches. They had to fire the writers and directors of Daredevil: Born Again because the quality of the show wasn’t what it should have been.
Now they’re trying to figure out how to properly manage the development of their TV shows. THR explains: “The company has eschewed the traditional model of television production. He didn’t commission pilots, but instead shot entire $150 million-plus seasons of television on the fly. It didn’t hire showrunners but instead depended on movie executives to run its series. And as Marvel does with its films, it relied on postproduction and reshoots to fix what wasn’t working.”
That’s probably not the best way to handle things, and it seems Marvel learned this the hard way. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation said in a statement: “We’re trying to marry Marvel culture with traditional television culture. The question boils down to: ‘How can we tell stories on television that honor what’s so great about the source material?'”
The report goes on to say that those working with Marvel on television projects “have complained of a lack of central vision that, according to sources, has begun to plague the studio’s shows with creative differences and tensions. An insider says: “TV is a writer-driven medium. Marvel is a Marvel-driven medium.
As for the show’s directors, another insider says that “The whole ‘fix it in post’ attitude makes it seem like a director doesn’t matter sometimes.”
As it moves forward, Marvel is now making concrete changes in how it makes its TV shows and will now be hiring showrunners. Winderbaum went on to say of the showrunners, “It’s a term we’ve not only become accustomed to, but learned to embrace.”
The studio will also hire full-time television executives instead of borrowing executives from its film division. Winderbaum said: “We need executives who are dedicated to this medium, who focus on streaming, who focus on television because they are two different forms.”
As for how Marvel will revamp its development process. The showrunners will write the series pilots along with the show bibles. It’s crazy to me that they weren’t already doing this! It seems like a no-brainer in TV development. After learning how Marvel did things, I’m surprised that some shows were as good as they were.
They were literally shooting an entire series on the fly and then watching it after they shot it to see what worked and what didn’t. Well, those days are over. Hopefully these changes will lead to some better television productions for Marvel.
