Vince Gilligan returns to his X-FILES roots for a new sci-fi series starring BETTER CALL SAUL actress Rhea Seehorn

Gilligan wins is best known for creating highly successful TV shows breaking Bad AND Better call Saulobut before striking out on his own, he learned the ropes of the hit series The X-Files, where he wrote 30 episodes and directed two. Now he’s returning to the sci-fi genre with his next project, an Untitled series that will feature an Emmy nomination. Better call Saulo star Rhea Seehorn.

In an interview with Variety, Gilligan said that now that the WGA strike is over, the writers’ room for the next series is reopening. He explained:

“When the strike broke out, we were very close to the end of the first season. So we’ll go back and finish the second to last episode and then get to work on the last episode… We can’t wait to get back to work. If it hadn’t been for the strike we would have already fired. The strike was a sad necessity and we are all happy that it is now behind us.”

The show was filmed at Gilligan’s television hotspots in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and he describes it as “light science fiction”.

“I wouldn’t call it heavy science fiction, I’d call it light science fiction. But it has a science fiction element to it. And there’s no crime and no meth. It’s going to be fun and different… I know it’s a story I’m interested in, and Rhea is going to play a very different character than she played in Saul. The strange thing is that it’s set in Albuquerque, except it’s a completely different world. There is no overlap that I can see.

He went on to tease that it’s set “in the world we live in,” but a version that “changes very abruptly in the first episode, and then it’s quite different…and hopefully the consequences that that picks up provide.” drama for many, many episodes thereafter. You seem to remember Walking Dead, or another apocalyptic-type story, but with Vince Gilligan at the helm, I know it’ll be good. I can’t wait to see what he has in store!
