Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez have agreed to serve as godparents to each other's future children as part of a pact to start their families around the same time, according to sources close to the pop stars.
The longtime best friends plan to align their family timelines in the coming months, with Swift having no upcoming tour scheduled and her husband Travis Kelce considering retirement from professional football after this season.
"Taylor and Selena have agreed they want to have their babies as close time wise to each other as possible so they can bring them up together," an insider told the Daily Mail. "They've essentially made a pact that they will be godmother to each other's children."

The agreement comes after Swift, 36, reportedly severed ties with actress Blake Lively and rescinded her role as godmother to Lively's children. An insider described the new godparent pact with Gomez as "a huge slap in the face to Blake Lively," whose children James, 11, Inez, nine, Betty, six, and Olin, three, previously counted Swift as a godmother.
Swift reportedly felt she had "no choice" but to "remove herself" from her role in the lives of Lively's children after their decade-long friendship collapsed last month. Sources stated the relationship fell apart after Lively, 38, dragged Swift into her high-profile legal battle with her It Ends with Us co-star Justin Baldoni.

Swift had publicly confirmed her godmother role to Lively's children in July 2024 through an Instagram post hyping up Lively's husband Ryan Reynolds, 49, and the release of his movie, Deadpool & Wolverine. However, her involvement in their lives long pre-dated the public acknowledgement, including namechecking the girls in her music, hosting them at her $17 million Rhode Island mansion, taking them trick-or-treating, and using James' baby voice at the beginning of her song Gorgeous.

Rift Between Gomez and Lively
Industry observers note that even before the fallout between Swift and Lively, the Gossip Girl actress rarely crossed paths with Gomez, 34. Although 38-year-old Lively entered Swift's orbit in 2015 years after Gomez had already established a close friendship with the singer, the two women were never photographed together at Swift's signature Fourth of July parties, birthday celebrations, New Year's Eve bashes, or NFL games.
Most recently, Gomez attended Swift's New York City wedding to 36-year-old Kelce, while Lively did not. Gomez, who is a godmother to her cousin Priscilla's two children, has seemingly made only one public reference to Lively, during a 2016 interview with Elle magazine.
When asked who of her friends she would trade places with, Gomez named Lively, saying: "I wish she was my friend, but she's not my friend. Blake Lively. I've never met her, but I just love her hair. I think she's got beautiful, effortless hair. I think she's super beachy."
By April 2024, reports exposed apparent bad blood between Gomez and Lively, with insiders claiming the two were not friends, did not "mix," and were "constantly avoiding run-ins with each other." Despite the tension, a second insider insisted Swift choosing Gomez as godmother "wouldn't be done to shade Blake."
"Taylor is very confident in her friendship with Selena and doesn't worry about having any falling out," the source said. "If Selena has kids, Taylor knows for a fact that she would be close to them all forever."

Two Decades of Sisterhood
Swift and Gomez first struck up a friendship in the summer of 2008 when they were photographed stepping out hand in hand in New York City while double-dating Jonas Brothers members Joe and Nick Jonas. Gomez later remarked that their enduring bond "was the best thing we got out of those relationships."
In the years that followed, coming of age together in the spotlight cemented their connection into what they describe as sisterhood. "Taylor and Selena are very close. They're like sisters," one insider told the Daily Mail. "For almost 20 years they've been there for each other on a personal and professional level. Selena's always been someone Taylor can trust 100 percent. They have a bond that's never been broken."

Swift has previously spoken about the rare nature of their relationship, noting that "longevity is something you really can find very precious and rare in friendships." Expressing her loyalty to the Rare Beauty founder, Swift once declared: "There has always been this quality of sisterhood, and I don't say that in a basic way. I knew from when I met her, I would always have her back. In my life, I have the ability to forgive people who have hurt me. But I don't know if I can forgive someone who hurts her."
Gomez expressed similar gratitude during an impromptu tribute while performing alongside Swift on her Eras Tour, telling the crowd: "This person has never ever judged a single decision I've made. She's always met me where I've been. She's encouraged me when I've had nothing to be encouraged about, and I don't know if I would be as strong as I am if I didn't have you and your family because you've changed my life. And - she's going to kill me after - but honestly, thank you for the bottom of my heart for supporting someone who I know is the most beautiful, strong, independent woman I've ever met. So thank you as a best friend."
Fertility Journeys and Shared Futures
The shared dream of motherhood coincides with Gomez and her husband, 38-year-old record producer Benny Blanco, actively searching for a surrogate. Gomez, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2013, candidly discussed her fertility struggles during a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, explaining that she had to "grieve" not being able to carry her own child.

"I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone," Gomez said at the time, adding: "[But] I'm in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. I'm excited for what that journey will look like, but it'll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don't care. It'll be mine. It'll be my baby." Gomez married Blanco in September last year.
Swift, who is already a godmother to actress and model Jaime King's ten-year-old son Leo Newman, also appears positioned to start a family. With no tour currently planned for Swift and Kelce eyeing retirement after this season, sources note that the timing aligns smoothly for both couples.

"Taylor and Selena are looking forward to sharing the experience of having their first child around the same time," the first insider stated, adding that "the timing works perfectly all around." Representatives for Swift and Gomez were contacted by the Daily Mail for comment.
