A 38-year-old woman named Karolina blocked her entire family after her younger brother ignored her birthday and asked her to pay for their parents' holiday, Hungarian newspaper Blikk reported.
The woman refused the demand and cut off contact following years of financial support, during which she had regularly paid off her relatives' debts and covered household expenses.
On her 38th birthday, Karolina took a day off work, baked a cake, and went to her favourite cafe expecting greetings from her family. Instead of receiving birthday wishes, her phone remained silent until her younger brother sent a text message containing a bank account number and a request to transfer half the cost of a trip for their parents.
Her brother did not ask if Karolina could afford the contribution. When she called to remind him it was her birthday, he expressed surprise, offered a brief congratulation, and immediately asked if she had transferred the funds. Karolina refused to pay, explaining that no one had consulted her about the trip.
Family confrontation and fallout
Following the refusal, Karolina's mother called and reproached her for preventing her brother from giving their parents a gift. Karolina told her mother that the family had forgotten about her as a person rather than just a source of money, before blocking her relatives' phone numbers.
Her family subsequently accused her of selfishness and disrespect towards the household. Despite their reactions, Karolina decided not to restore relations with her relatives.
Background on family obligations
As the eldest child in her family, Karolina had been given special responsibilities by her parents from childhood. She grew up assisting her younger brother and sister, managing domestic matters, and stepping in during family difficulties. Family dynamics research often notes that eldest children frequently assume caretaking roles that can persist into adulthood.
Over the years, Karolina helped her sister pack and relocate during a move. She also stepped in to clear debts incurred by her brother, who had purchased expensive photography equipment for a professional career he later abandoned. Karolina had long considered these actions a normal expression of family love before realizing the support was entirely one-sided.
Relief after setting boundaries
Four months after severing ties, Karolina reported feeling significant relief from no longer financing failed projects or solving other people's problems. She said establishing personal boundaries allowed her to reclaim her time and energy for her own life.
