As you know, there was a point in this Quentin Tarantinoin his career where he was developing an R rating Star Trek movie, and when he started that journey he had a lot of ideas for things he wanted to do.
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, writer Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, The Magic Order) shared that he was actually in the writer’s room for Tarantino’s Star Trek film, and talked about that experience and Tarantino’s “passionate ideas.” She said:
“We went in and [Tarantino] started with, “So, what are your guys’ ideas for a movie?” and I think I went first,” Beer said. “So he listened to us patiently and just nodded, and then he took out his notebook and started speaking for 20 minutes with passionate lines of dialogue and ideas that he already had written. It wasn’t a real story yet; it was just random thoughts he had about a movie, but it was so passionate and wonderful. And I laughed to myself and thought, ‘Well, why didn’t we start with that?’ There was a funny moment where he stopped in the middle of the room, turned to me and said, ‘Lindsey, you’re really good at this.’ And to receive that compliment from someone whose career I admire so much has meant a lot, obviously.
She wasn’t the only one to work with Tarantino on the film. The screenplay was also developed by Mark L Smith (The avenger), and previously shared his experience and what they were planning for the film, saying:
“I wrote a Star Trek with Tarantino, and that was a science fiction script that I could have fun with and do some bigger, broader things.
“We wanted to [The Midnight Sky] be in the future, but not so far in the future that you think it can’t happen. I watched many different TED talks regarding the planets that would be chosen and how the ship would operate. As they go through space, I held it where they enter blackout zones – they lose communication for a few weeks, so any messages they received from home were at least a couple of weeks behind. Sure, I cheated in a few areas, but nothing major. It wasn’t like anyone had been teleported!”
Smith went on to explain that he was drawn to the series’ “deep” characters, saying, “All the relationships felt real and something I could identify with.” He also revealed that Captain Kirk would be in the film and that they would have a lot of fun with the character:
“I love Picard. And Kirk is always so funny. Tarantino and I had a lot of fun with him, because Kirk is just William Shatner, you know? It’s like: you’re not sure who’s who, so you can lean on that! Because you look at Chris Pine and he plays Kirk, but he also plays William Shatner a little bit.
It was previously reported that Tarantino’s film “is based on an episode of the classic Star Trek series that takes place largely on Earth in a 1930s gangster setting.”
The episode this story is based on is titled “A Piece of the Action”, which was the seventeenth episode of the second season. It aired on January 12, 1968. The story centered on Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Doctor McCoy as they teleport to a planet called Iotia where they discover a planetary government modeled after the Chicago gangs of the 1920s.
Tarantino said he also wanted to bring some elements of Pulp Fiction into the series. He also said:
“I don’t know if I will or not. I have to understand, but Mark wrote a really interesting script. I really like. There are some things I need to work on, but I really enjoyed it.
This Star Trek film project will most likely never get made, which is a shame, because many fans would have liked to see it! It could have been really good and fun Star Trek hit.
