Scheduled for release in 2024, the film will be released 24 years after the first and will tell a completely new story set in that time frame. The film will be the protagonist Paolo Mescal like Lucio, Pedro Pasquale, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen back in the role of Lucilla, Fred Hechinger will play Emperor Geta, and Joseph Quinn will play Emperor Caracalla. Up to this point, Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington He was only rumored to have taken on a mystery role, but Ridley Scott has now given us a little insight into who he’ll be playing.
In an upcoming interview with Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar), Scott was asked about Washington’s character and he described him, saying:
“As for Denzel’s character… There was business of gladiators who could actually earn their freedom if they stayed alive. That was the deal. So we went straight to that, in depth. Where did it come from? How was he taken? He was branded with brands and registered with a mark on his chest as a slave. That’s how he comes into history.”
The process by which a Gladiator regains his freedom was explored extensively in the original film, where the once powerful general Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, is forced to become a common gladiator after being sold into slavery. Scott then goes on to explain how Washington’s character is ruthless towards the Romans because of what happened to him in the past. “He IS a rich guy who still holds a grudge,” Scott concludes.
The director went on to declare his admiration for the Hollywood star, adding: “I respect Denzel Washington very much. I shouldn’t call Denzel a golden old man – he would fucking kill me – but he’s gold dust.” This will be the second time the pair have worked together after Washington starred in Scott’s 2007 film, American gangster.
Gladiator 2 will be released in 2024 and will follow Commodus’ nephew (Mescal) who was saved by Maximus in the original.
