Before Samuel L. Jackson was cast as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character was played by Knight Knight AND Baywatch star David Hasselhoff in the 1998 TV movie from Marvel Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD.
That series was supposed to launch a Hasselhoff-led television series, and Nick Fury was billed as “the ultimate superhero.”
That TV movie was originally conceived as a feature film that would be released theatrically, and the screenplay for that film was written by David S. Goyer. The budget was $15 million and it was one of his first film projects, and he recently explained what happened with this project and why his version of the film wasn’t produced. He told the Happy Sad Confused podcast:
“Sometimes people give [Nick Fury] as credit or cite it as an example of me not being a good screenwriter. I wrote a screenplay, [but] that whole thing is gone. Years later, they said, “We’ll do it as a TV movie at Fox, for about three million dollars, with David Hasselhoff, without taking anything away from David Hasselhoff.”
When asked if he would work on the now made-for-TV movie, Goyer recalled, “I thought, ‘No. I don’t want any involvement with it, no. Goodbye.’ It was rewritten by God knows who, or how many people, and then there it was.”
So Goyer really has nothing to do with the how Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD it was discovered. It’s something she wanted nothing to do with. I’ve only seen that movie once and it’s one of those movies I never need to see again.
