ROGUE ONE director Gareth Edwards talks about his STAR WARS movie experience after Tony Gilroy replaced him for reshoots

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwardswho recently directed the upcoming sci-fi epic The creatorhe recently faced his time working on his Star Wars movie. While Rogue One in the end it was a great movie, the movie went through some behind the scenes drama and extensive reshoots.

Edwards was replaced by the film’s screenwriter Tony Gilroy for those shots and the post-production process. While it seems like it was a difficult experience for Edwards, he holds no hard feelings and is grateful for the time he put into making the film. During a recent interview with Variety, he said:

“Look, the only thing I can say is that I was incredibly lucky. I got to make a Star Wars movie. I hit the lottery, in that sense. The idea of someone as privileged as me somehow implies that it was of something different rather than the amazing experience that it was to some extent – like, I have no empathy for that person, and I don’t even want to be that person.”

As for reports of Gilroy taking over directorial duties, this is “the closest Edwards gets to addressing” those Rogue One relationships:

“How you make a movie is as important as its script. I would have full control of the process and a mediocre script instead of a really good script and zero control over the process.”

After making that film, Edwards took a seven-year break from making films and then came on board and made The creator. He explained:

“I needed to get off the ride, you know what I mean? In Hollywood you can get stuck on the hamster wheel, or whatever analogy you want to use. I just wanted to get off and take a break to take some time to think about the next thing.”

He went on to explain that while he was making these big-budget Hollywood films, he found that more money didn’t necessarily give him freedom:

“I got to make a very low-budget sci-fi movie with Monsters, and I realized there were some serious advantages to having no money. It was kind of a shock to have all the money you could want and still be limited. I had the feeling that if I could somehow take that big bag of money and send it back to when I was making Monsters, the possibilities would be endless. And so, in a strange way, I was trying to find that kind of scenario. I was as interested in the process of making the film as I was in the idea.”

The creator tells a story on an epic scale, set in the distant future after a “catastrophic and apocalyptic war” between humans and artificial intelligence. John David Washington protagonist of the film as a character who is tasked with saving the world, but may have to kill a child robot with artificial intelligence to do so.

The film is based on an original story and screenplay written by Edwards Chris Weitzand the synopsis reads: “In the midst of a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened former Special Forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced artificial intelligence who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end war… and humanity itself.

It explains: “Joshua and his team of elite agents travel behind enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover that the world-ending weapon they were ordered to destroy it’s an artificial intelligence in the form of a child.”

After The creator comes out, I’m sure Edwards will be offered many film projects. Whatever happened behind the scenes Rogue One will be forgotten, because The creator This looks like it’s going to be a great movie!
