The animated short NINETY-FIVE SENSES from the director of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE offers an interesting insight into life

I have a beautifully made animated short film for you to watch today called Ninety-five senses from the creative team behind it Napoleon’s dynamite AND Free Nacho, Jared AND Jerusha Hess. The film is a contender for the 2024 short film Oscar.

The film does not have the director’s typical humor, but it offers an interesting and moving look at life and our senses. The story is told through the reflections of a death row inmate finishing his last meal.

It begins as a gentle exploration of the body’s five senses. But when Coy makes a shocking confession, the story takes a disturbing yet contemplative turn, as he reflects on his final moments, wondering what awaits him after this life and whether we might then have access to “all our ninety-five senses.” “.

The film is divided into six parts and each part of the film is dedicated to one sense and the animation was done by different artists. Speaking about the film’s story, Hess told Cartoon Brew:

“The film was inspired by footage of death row inmates awaiting lethal injection in the Huntsville unit in Texas. It is the busiest execution chamber in the United States. Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, writers we have known and worked with for years, had done research in that area, studying “exit interviews” with convicted men. They imagined a prisoner reviewing his life through each of his five senses. When we read what they came up with, we knew he was special. Funny, sad, smart.
