I have a great video essay here for you to watch today, written by Evan Puschak of The Nerdwriter. In this video, titled “The Life Cycle of Superhero Storytelling,” he explores the development of characters, crossover events, and reboots when some stories get too out of control, and how they all work to create a life cycle that continues to please fans . and it all starts with the age-old question… Marvel or DC?
Dependence on interconnectivity is growing. Crossover events are occurring with increasing frequency. Independent stories become rarer. Continuity becomes convoluted… To understand it, in the end, the only option left is one…. update or reboot. …Things get simplified, stories get erased, and characters are brought back from the dead. This is the circle of life in superhero comics.
There are a lot of cool things highlighted in this video, so if you’re a fan of superhero comic book stories, check it out!
