Director Gareth Edwards he is best known for his big budget action films like Monsters, GodzillaAND Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He’s heading towards perhaps the biggest movie she’s ever made sci-fi adventure drama, The creator, and during a recent press screening of 30 minutes of footage from the film, as well as a Q&A session with Edwards, the director was asked which films influenced him during production. Ever since Edwards’ first film, movie posters have hung in the editing room and inspired everything he’s working on.
/Film Reports Edwards Explained:
“…there is a film called ‘Baraka.’ “Koyaanisqastsi”, the cinematographer continued and directed another film called “Baraka”, which I think is one of the greatest films ever made.”Lone Wolf and Cub”, which is a Japanese manga series, there is a A lot of In the US it was called ‘The Sword of Vengeance.’ There are really obvious ones, like ‘Apocalypse Now’ and ‘Blade Runner’, and I guess, in terms of dynamics, maybe a little ‘Rain Man’. It’s kind of a journey with someone normal and someone a little special, different, however you want to say it. It’s ‘Paper Moon’, that kind of dynamic.”
As Edwards said, there are a lot of simple connections to make here, like Apocalypse now is a war film, e Blade Runner it’s futuristic and gritty. I find the Rain Man interesting connection, like maybe the relationship with John David WashingtonThe character of Joshua, and the young robot Alphie, is initially based on Joshua’s needs, but then evolves into a relationship based on love.
I’m not familiar with the other films in Edwards’ list, but I think it would be good to try them before watching his latest film.
The creator will be released in theaters on September 29, 2023.
