The equalizer franchise manager Antonio Fuqua he’s made some great movies over the course of his career and recently revealed that there are two he’d like to release director’s cuts for. During a recent interview with IndieWire, the director was specifically asked if he would envisage a longer cut of his 2016 action western film. The Magnificent Seven. He replied, saying:
“[Ethan Hawke] i saw the first one [cut]. I don’t know where it is now, though, with MGM, I should try and get it. I would like to cut it out myself, but I don’t know who would pay for it. Should I pay for it, sooner or later I might try. But yeah, he saw the first cut, which I thought was better. You deal with the studio, the times and the theatres, but your business is business. But I wish that was the version [that was released].”
In The Magnificent Seven, “With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), desperate citizens enlist the protection of outlaw sects, bounty hunters, gamblers and mercenaries – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the city for the violent showdown they know is imminent, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than just money.
He went on to say that he would also like to release a director’s version of his 2003 action thriller Tears of the sunwho acted Bruce Willis AND Monica Bellucci. He said:
“There was so much more. It has been reduced a lot. It became a little more star-driven, and that wasn’t the intention. It was more about people and events, and then of course that changed. But Bruce Willis is an amazing movie star, and I understand that.
In Tears of the Sun: “The Nigerian government has fallen and the country is on the brink of civil war. Lieutenant AK Waters (Willis) has been assigned to lead a squad of soldiers into the Nigerian jungle to rescue Dr. Lena Kendricks (Bellucci). When Waters and her team locate Kendricks, she tells them she will not let her helpless patients be slaughtered by the rebels. The team incurs the wrath of both US and Nigerian forces when they side with Kendricks and attempt to get the refugees to safety.”
I have no idea Fuqua will ever get the opportunity to do director’s cuts for these films. I doubt it happens, but if it ever does, I’d watch them!
