As soon as Denis Villeneuve has accepted the challenge of adaptation Frank Herbert’S Dune in a movie, fans knew the story was in good hands. He did an incredible job with the first movie and fans are dying to see the next epic chapter in the story. Too bad the movie was delayed until March of 2024! I was really excited and was looking forward to watching this movie this year!
During a recent interview with Empire, Villeneuve speaks Dune: second part, on which he is deeply engaged in post-production. He begins by saying:
“The film is alive! The first part was like a promise of something, but the second part keeps it. I’m exhausted, but I’m a happy director.”
The upcoming film will explore the “mythical journey of Paul Atreides as he joins Chani and the Fremen on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Faced with the choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he attempts to prevent a terrible future that only he can predict.”
The director goes on to talk about how the next chapter of the story is about love and war, saying:
“The first film was more contemplative: a young man discovering a world. Well, it’s a war movie. At its core is a love story between Paul and Chani. How Paul will gain her trust, how she will open her heart to him, and how they will find a way to free Chani’s world from the Harkonnens’ grip. It’s a much more emotional film.
This second half of the film is definitely where things get into the thick of the story and the characters. While the first Dune movie was great, this sequel is going to be amazing! The director continued to talk about Timothee Chalamet and the evolution of his character Paul Atreides in this next film saying:
“I remember when I was shooting the first part, I kept saying to Timothée: ‘No, you’re just Paul.’ Because he was trying to reach Muad’Dib. He couldn’t wait to be that hero and I was hitting the brakes. He has the power to change things, but he knows that if he does, he’ll create an astronomical amount of violence and become something of a dictator. He’s trying to find a way to avoid that unnerving future: this is the weight of him on his shoulders “Buckle up: Dune gets bigger and bigger from here.”
Dune it only gets bigger from here! Furthermore, Villeneuve is already developing Dunes: third partso we also have this to look forward to!
Also includes the returning cast Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Josh BrolinAND Stephen McKinley Henderson. New cast members include Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot, e Souheila Yacoub like Shishakli.
Villeneuve had already spoken about the film, saying that he wanted this film to have a lot of heart and that he wanted to make a film that was very human. He explained: “I wanted to make a very human film, very close to the characters, despite the scope of the film. I kept saying to my crew, “The most important thing is that spark, that relationship between these two characters.” If we don’t capture it, if we don’t have it on the screen, there will be no film. The epicenter of the story is this relationship”.
