One of the big surprises revealed about Kamala Khan in Marvel Mrs. Marvel series was that the creative team made her a mutant. Many fans rolled their eyes at this plot point. Technically, Mrs. Marvel he is the first mutant introduced in the MCU. While some fans were not happy with the change of character, actress Iman Vellani I was super excited about it. In fact, he’s writing a new comic for Marvel titled, Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant.
The actress took to Marvel.com to talk about her new comic and to write the first chapters of Kamala Khan’s journey as a member of the X-Men. She also spoke about her excitement and fan reaction to the character being a mutant, saying:
“It’s a big deal! And it’s great that she’s a big enough character for this change to matter so much! The uproar on social media after the announcement was crazy, but so emotional to me that so many people are they’re concerned, and obviously they hadn’t read the story at this point, so they’re not judging at this time.”
In preparation for writing the comic, Vellani took a deep dive into the X-Men. He had to because he had never read any X-Men comics before:
“But I was so excited, because being a mutant is just… I mean, I’ve never read a lot of X-Men comics; X-Men, looking for my favorite characters. Grant Morrison E [Jonathan] Hickman racing has basically been my textbook for this whole thing.”
When she talks about continuing to explore this mutant side of Kamala and the weight she carries in her life, she says:
“I think it was really fun to explore this different side of her, because Kamala has already dealt with so many different labels. She’s been an Avenger, she’s been an Inhuman, she’s been a Champion, Pakistani, Muslim. a mutant is just another label to add to the list, and it doesn’t change a thing because she’s always had the X gene, so it doesn’t really matter.. Doesn’t she realize that this new costume, the new colors, bear a lot more weight than what he expected.
“The world’s whole perspective on Ms. Marvel changes very drastically and, for the first time, she gets a taste of what it’s like to be seen as a villain and an enemy, because especially after the Hellfire Gala, the world just plain hates mutants. : That’s horrible! We put Kamala at Empire State University and created a program funded by Orchis…and it’s hard for her, what would that be like!”
Vellani will return to the role of Mrs. Marvel in the next Marvel movie The wonders. I guess writing a Ms. Marvel comic was able to keep her in tune with her character and obviously allow her to further explore her journey. Sounds enthusiastic!
