Disney Not Moving Forward With Live-Action Series Adaptation Of THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES Even Though It’s Completed

Disney has decided not to move forward with the live-action series adaptation of the Spiderwick Chronicles. The eight-episode series has already been completed and is being developed by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Century Television. The project may no longer be coming to Disney+, but is currently being picked up by other potential buyers.

Based on the bestselling book series by Tony DiTerlizzi AND Black Holly“the Spiderwick Chronicles is a contemporary American gothic coming of age story that caters to children and families dealing with mental health issues among other relevant topics. After leaving New York and moving to Michigan, in their dilapidated ancestral home, The Spiderwick Estate, with their mother, twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves drawn into an alternate fantasy world.

Deadline explains the reasoning behind Disney’s decision not to proceed with the series by saying, “The decision comes as Disney – along with other media companies – have reevaluated their streaming strategies by cutting programming costs with a renewed focus on profitability. It’s part of the major content cancellation announced by Disney in May.”

Chief Financial Officer of Disney Christina McCarthy he said at the time, “We are reviewing the content of our DTC services to align with strategic changes in our approach to content curation. As a result, we will remove some content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to incur an impairment cost of approximately $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion.”

Subsequently, Disney pulled dozens of original series and specials from Disney+ and Hulu. the Spiderwick Chronicles it would be one of the few non-Disney IPs coming to Disney+ and also coming from an outside studio. Disney is now looking to lean more on Disney-owned intellectual property. But they still have the upcoming Goosebumps series from Sony TV and a new installment of Doctor Who from the BBC.

Kat Coiro directed the first two episodes of the series, a modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventures. Christian Slate in the series was to play the villain Mulgarath, and the rest of the cast includes Jack Dylan Grazer, Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell, Joy BryantAND Mychala Lee.
