It was recently announced that Dark Castle was looking to develop a serial adaptation of the horror film Thirteen ghosts. Now we have some new details to share with you about the project.
The series was rumored to consist of thirteen episodes with an anthology style that dives into a different ghost in each episode. It was previously explained by the makers of the show, Patrick Mediator, Aaron McLane (Fear the walking dead), Ashley Robinson (Fear the walking dead):
“Every culture in the world has its own ghost stories, and this retelling of 13 Ghosts features an international sample of these supernatural tales. The ghost stories within each episode will have their own stylistic aspect that will be explored and influenced by each individual director. This makes our ghost cartoons stand out stylistically as they establish the theme of each episode.
At the end of the 2001 film, the ghosts are released and wander off into the woods. According to Bloody-Disgusting, Thirteen ghosts it is described as the “crown jewel of their library”, as well as “a property long awaiting a resurrection”. So, it looks like they’re going to give everything on this project.
It was further reported that the fan-favorite character, known as The Jackal, “would be a major player in the series, and the plan is also to delve into the creation of the machine built to contain various ghosts, known as the Basileus Machine.” , as well as the ancient book that served as the film’s Necronomicon, the Beyonder.”
Mediate shared, “It was always clear to us that there was so much to explore in the background of the ghosts, so it’s only natural that we created each episode to explore and examine their origin stories, personalities, hardships and destinies. These stories serve as guidelines that intertwine with the mysterious legacy of Cyrus Kriticos and his current extended family, who have just become caretakers of the Kriticos Complex.
He added, “One of the amazing things about structuring the narrative in this unconventional way is that we can cleverly, and often surprisingly, have the ghosts’ past actually affect all of the parallel narratives that play out throughout each episode.” which we believe will offer a fresh and highly unique storytelling experience for the viewer.”
One of the other cool things they’re trying to do is add an AR component to the series. This concept would use AR technology to allow viewers to invite the ghosts of the show into their homes. This is such an original gimmick 13 ghosts director William Castle would have loved. Castle used the “Ghost Viewer” in his 1960 film.
The creative team is also looking to expand the world and stories with more seasons. Mediate said: “Let’s imagine a whole universe for the 13 ghosts: the series franchise that lives eternally after the first season and continues to explore different planes of mortal and post-mortal realities; it’s actually going to be something pretty profound that could be a huge testament to the worlds we’re laying the groundwork for with Season 1. Long and short, this will absolutely be a series with three-dimensional stories and characters that fans will want to join for multiple seasons.
At the moment, there’s no movement on the project due to the ongoing writers’ strikes, but once things settle down, the creative team and studio will “get to work and roll over.”
There is another problem, however, that they must try to solve. Sony Pictures owns a portion of the rights to Thirteen ghosts, and need Sony’s approval to be able to develop the series. Dark Castle really hopes Sony will let them play Thirteen ghosts sandbox. The project was pitched to Sony before the strike, so it’s just a waiting game for now.
Mediate continued, explaining, “Having Dark Castle’s backing and blessing is only part of the equation as Sony Pictures Television owns 50% of the rights. Right now the future of this series is completely in Sony’s court as we pitched to them right before the strike occurred.
The team is “hopeful that when the strike ends we can build enough support to greenlight the series with a solid distributor, so fans need to let it be known that they want this vision and they want it as a series now more than ever. “
Mediate goes on to promise, “As a united force with Dark Castle and one who steadfastly supports our vision, we want to make sure that this series respects and pays homage to the deep roots of William Castle’s original cult classic and its huge existing fan base, reinventing at the while its ensemble of characters and story arcs to propel the property into the 21st century and attract a whole new universe of fans.
