Trailer for plane crash survival drama SOCIETY OF THE SNOW by director JA Bayona

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming plane crash survival drama Snow Society. The film tells the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes on October 13, 1972. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash. What a horrific and intense situation. But I like survival stories about endurance and perseverance in dangerous environments.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Paul Vierci, and the synopsis reads: “In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which was chartered to carry a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they must resort to extreme measures to survive.”

The film was directed by J. A. Bayona (The impossible, when a monster calls), and talking about why he wanted to take on this project, he told Deadline: “I think I’m drawn to these really extreme stories. They might feel dark, but, in the end, they are very optimistic about life. I think that to improve life sometimes it is necessary to face death. One of the things I love about Vierci’s book is that he gets you into the minds of the characters. It makes you live this experience; it puts you before death to highlight life. It’s something you can find in common with The impossible. It’s a very different story, though, and it’s a very different context. The impossible it happened in 72 hours. This happened in 72 days and the geography is totally different. One of the things that I think is very special Snow Society is that it happens in a place where life is not possible. You have to reinvent life. You have to reinvent your beliefs. You have to reinvent your connection, your bond with other people.

The cast of the film includes Enzo Vogrincic, Agostino Pardella, Matías Recalt, Esteban Billiardi, Raffaele Federman, Fernando Contigiani Garcia, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francis Romero, Valentino Alonso, Thomas Wolf, Augustine Della Corte, Felipe Otano, Andy Pruss, Blas Polidori, Philip RamusioAND Simone Hempe.

It looks like it could be a great film and will premiere at the Venice Film Festival 2023 as the closing film. Netflix will then release it in late 2023.
