As you know, Disney has put a lot of care and attention into remaking some of their animated classics as live-action movies, and none of them have been as good as the original movies. But, in most cases, this plan has worked for the studio and these remakes have made them a lot of money which is why they keep doing it.
It stands to reason that at some point they will develop a live-action Tangled movie. The original film starred Mandy Moore like Rapunzel and Zechariah Levi he assumed the role of Flynn Rider.
During a recent panel at a fan convention, Levi talked about the idea of Florence Pugh playing Rapunzel in a live-action remake of Tangled saying if that happens, she wants to reprise her role as Flynn Rider.
“There was this thing, I just saw it before, floating around the internet that Florence Pugh could potentially play Rapunzel. And if Florence plays Rapunzel… (inaudible excited noise). It would also be a trip because the my true my last name is Pugh, by the way. My name is Zachary Levi Pugh. Would you have a Pugh-Pugh (makes pew-pew noise) in Tangled? Come on!”
First of all… yes, Florence Pugh as Rapunzel makes all the sense in the world. That’s inspired casting right there! As for Levi playing Flynn, that’s never going to happen. Disney will want to sign someone much younger. Hell, they might even think Pugh is too old for the role of Rapunzel!
As for the current status of a Tangled live-action film, there was a report from four years ago that a film was in the works. Ashleigh Powell (The Nutcracker and the Four Realms) was supposed to write the screenplay. It was produced by Michael DeLuca (Moneyball, Captain Phillips) AND Kristin Burr (Christopher Robin). Study director Zoe Kent, who is working on the live-action Lilo and Stitch for Disney+ and Jessica Virtue (Mulan 2020) is said to be overseeing the project Lucia Kitada (Eleanor and Park). But there have been no updates on the project since then.
Right now, one of the craziest rumors floating around the internet is that Jada Pinkett Smith has been cast in the film, but there is absolutely no indication that that is true.
