THE Barbie the film is upon us and is shaping up to be a big hit at the box office. protagonist of the film, Margot Robbie, pitched the film to Warner Bros. when it was still just an idea, and part of that speech referred to his belief that the film could be big enough to earn $1 billion in its theatrical run. The actress explained to Collider:
“I think my talk at the green light meeting was that studios have thrived so much when they’re brave enough to pair a great idea with a visionary director. And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘Dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’, naming just about everything that was incredible and made a lot of money for studios over the years. And I was like, ‘And now you have Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them he was going to make a billion dollars, that maybe I was selling too much, but we had a movie to do, okay?”
We won’t know how well the film does for a while, but Deadline reports that the film’s opening weekend could hit $130 million for its opening, which would be its best presale since. Avatar: The Way of Water. However it turns out, I’m just happy that we have films again that are bringing people back to the theatre.
