Illumination, the animation studio behind it The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minions, Despicable Me, SingAND The secret life of petsreleased a trailer for their latest film, Migration, an adventure comedy that will take audiences “into the thrill of the unknown with a feathery, fun family vacation like no other.” It looks like a fun movie that the whole family will enjoy. Lighting has a solid track record of making entertaining animated films.
The film centers on the Mallard family, who are in a bit of trouble. “While dad Mack is content to keep his family safe by forever splashing around in the New England pond, mom Pam is eager to shake things up and show their kids, teenage son Dax and duckling daughter Gwen, the whole world. After a family of migrating ducks alight on their pond with exciting stories of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to take a family road trip, through New York City, to tropical Jamaica.
As the mallards head south for the winter, “their well-laid plans soon go awry. The experience will inspire them to expand their horizons, open up to new friends and accomplish more than they ever thought possible, teaching them more about each other – and about themselves – than they ever imagined.
The screenplay of the film was written by Mike White (The White Lotus, School of Rock) and was directed by Benjamin Renner (Ernest & Celestine AND The Big Bad Fox and Other Stories). The cast is led by Kumail Nanjiani (The big sick, the eternal) as anxious Mallard dad, Mack; AND Elizabeth Banks (Hunger games AND Pitch perfect franchise) as Pam, the bold and witty matriarch of the Mallards.
They are united by Caspar Jennings as Dax, the confident and restless son of the Mallards, and, in his feature film debut, Tresi Gazal plays Gwen, the innocent and lovable daughter of the family. She also has Awkwafina (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as the grumpy leader of a New York City gang of pigeons; Carol Kane (The princess bride) as Erin the heron, the first friend the mallards meet on their journey; keegan-Michael Key (The Super Mario Bros. movie, The Lion King) voices a homesick Jamaican parrot cooped up in a Manhattan restaurant; David Mitchell (Peep Show) plays the yogic head of a mysterious duck farm; Danny DeVito (It’s always sunny in Philadelphia) plays Mack’s gruff, adventure-averse Uncle Dan.
Migration is described as “a visual spectacle unlike any other in Illumination’s acclaimed history, featuring high expressionist artistry and Illumination’s signature subversive humor and authentic heart, unforgettable characters, and a joyous soundtrack.”
The film will be released in theaters on December 22.
