Sonya Red is getting a new film adaptation thanks to Millennium Media and the director MJ Bassett (Solomon Kane, Silent Hill: Revelation). I’ve been really curious about this movie, which stars Matilda Lutz (Vendetta) as the fan favorite badass warrior.
The first trailer for the film has been confirmed to premiere at San Diego Comic-Con later this week during a panel honoring the character’s 50th anniversary.
The press release reads: “Dynamite announces an exciting panel for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con as creators and fans celebrate 50 amazing years of Red Sonja! Plus a retrospective discussion on the legacy and past of the character, her future will be looked at with new comics, novels, and an exclusive debut teaser trailer for her upcoming Millennium Media blockbuster starring Matilda Lutz!
Red Sonja, president of LLC, executive editor and producer of the next film Luke Liebermann will act as panel moderator, joined by franchise contributors Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, Amy Chu, Dan Panosianproducer Mark Cantonand other guests.
“The story of the beloved She-Devil With a Sword began in comics in 1973, and now 50 years later she remains the greatest female sword and sorcery hero of them all! She has carved her way into the hearts of fantasy and comic book fans across the globe.An incredible array of writers and artists have taken on his stories in his native medium of comics, including the likes of Roy Thomas, Frank Thorne, Gal Simon, Mirka Andolfo, Mike Carey, Michael Avon Oeming, Jim Zub, Louise Simonson, Mark Russell, Alex Ross, Mel Rubyand countless others.
“With the launch of the first issue right in sync with San Diego Comic-Con, fans will be able to dive right into his latest epic series celebrating the anniversary of Torunn Gronbekk (Thor, Reign of X) and fan-favorite franchise artist Walter Jehovah. How this series came to be and the teases for what comes next will be discussed in the panel. Plus a surprise additional comic series from a great creator!
Panellists will be the first to see a teaser trailer for Millennium Media’s highly anticipated upcoming film (Expend4bles) starring Matilda Lutz as the fearsome warrior, Wallis Day (Sex/life, Batwoman) as Annisia, e Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy, Misfits) as Draygan with Bassett directing and a screenplay written by Tasha Huo (by Netflix tomb Raider).
“Audiences will also have the opportunity to watch an entertaining video tribute from some of the biggest creators associated with the character. Key details from the panel will be shared extensively with fans following the event.”
The Red Sonja panel will be held on Friday, July 21 at 11:30am PT in room 5AB. Red Sonja’s film does not yet have a release date.
