This week’s retro trailer is for the 1984 fantasy adventure film The Company of Wolves. The film was directed by Neil Jordan and serves as a dark and visually striking retelling of traditional fairy tales.
The film follows the story of Rosaleen, a young girl played by Sarah Patterson, who is drawn into a dream world where reality intertwines with the supernatural. Set in a remote village plagued by werewolf legends:
Wolves and werewolves lurk in the dreams of young Rosaleen, who imagines she must travel through a dark forest to live with her grandmother (Angela Lansbury). When Rosaleen encounters a rugged hunter in the woods, she discovers she has an animal attraction to him, leading to a gruesome turn of events. The lupine-centric film also features stories within the main tale, told by both Rosaleen and her grandmother, all of which have a supernatural bent.
This is actually a beautifully shot film and the story offers an inspiring exploration of folklore and the dark corners of the human psyche. The story blurs the lines between dream and reality as Rosaleen confronts her fears and desires for her.
Check out the trailer below, and I’ve also included the full movie if you want to watch it!
