James Gunn confirms that BLUE BEETLE will continue in the DCU

Since James Gunn AND Peter Safran took over from DC Studios, fans wondered what would be the fate of the current characters we see in DC movies. While some were sadly recast, one newcomer was invited back just before its big screen debut.

Fans can’t wait to see Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña assume the role of DC Blue Beetle next month, but we weren’t sure how it would fit into Gunn’s universe, or if it would. But as Gunn often does, he responded to a fan on Twitter asking about the character’s fate, saying:

It’s quite exciting to hear! I like the trailers we’ve seen so far of the film and I think Maridueña is perfect in the role. It will be nice to see where she goes from here.

The synopsis of the films reads:

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find home isn’t quite the way he left it. As he tries to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Beetle. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with incredible armor with extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero BLUE BEETLE.

Blue Beetle was directed by Angelo Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The film is the protagonist Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as Reyes; Bruna Marchezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillen; AND Susan Sarandon as the villain, Victoria Kord.
