Christopher McQuarrie and Simon Pegg talk about collaborating with the eccentric and talented Tom Cruise

We all know that Tom Cruise he’s a great actor, a talented stuntman, risk-taker and a little weird. It’s like the perfect storm of intensity that makes the guy who he is, and Christopher McCarrie AND Simone Pegg have some kind words to say about him. McQuarrie isn’t just his newest Mission Impossible director, but his collaborator and friend who worked with him in the last three Mission: Impossible Movies and product Top Gun: nonconformist ever since I first worked with Cruise Valkyrie.

McQuarrie told The Times newspaper that when he first met the veteran action star in 2006, Cruise explained, “I do mass entertainment.”

During the project about a wartime mission to kill Hitler, Cruise realized that more money was needed to complete the film and decided to modify the script to suit as large a cinematic audience as possible.

McQuarrie said:

“There is tremendous importance attached to the Oscars. Movies that not many will see. A wedge has been introduced into the industry. Are you an artist or an entertainer? Tom doesn’t see them as mutually exclusive.

The director added that Cruise also told him the strangest story he’s heard about himself. The actor responded that the biggest myth about him was that people on set “couldn’t look me in the eye.”

Cruise’s friend and frequent co-star Simone Pegg also told the Times that Cruise’s determination to keep the film industry going during the pandemic was behind his meltdown due to a crew member breaking social distancing rules on the set of seventh Mission Impossible movie.

Cruise was famously recorded shouting, “Do it again and you’re gone,” at the errant crew member. Pegg told the Times:

“Everything Tom cares about, in terms of his job, was at stake because of the pandemic. For him there was the danger that this virus could wipe cinema off the face of this earth”.

Cruise is a pretty intense guy. But despite all his quirks, you have to admit that he makes a great movie! Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning part one hits theaters this week.
