Oppenheimer will be Christopher Nolanit is the first R-rated film since his 2002 feature film Insomniaand now we know one of the main reasons why.
According to the star of the film Cillian Murphythe film will include “prolonged full nudity” and sex scenes between Murphy and Florence Pugalong with “complicated” scenes with Emilia Blunt. The actor went on to say that filming those scenes with Blunt “was pretty heavy” and added, “I’ve been given strict instructions not to reveal anything.”
Pugh plays J. Robert Oppenhiemer’s ex-girlfriend and lover, Jean Tatlock, who was a psychiatrist and member of the Communist Party, while Blunt plays the role of his wife, scientist Kitty Oppenheimer. As you can imagine, the age difference between Pugh (27) and Murphy (47) has caused quite a stir on social media. The 20-year age difference between the actors is double that of real-life Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock. This is Hollywood for you!
It’s funny that the most controversial thing about a movie that tells the story of the creation of the devastating nuclear weapon that will change the world is the sex and nudity that will be in it.
is hardly the most controversial thing about the film as it is exploring Oppenheimer’s development of the devastating atomic bomb:
Blunt and Murphy have already starred alongside each other in A quiet place 2, which the actor explained helped with their Oppenheimer scenes. He said, “You can be instantly vulnerable and open and try things. There were moments where I remember saying, ‘I couldn’t have done that if it wasn’t with you.'”
The film centers on the scientist who ran the Manhattan Project which led to the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II. The film has been described as an “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the heart-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world to save it.”
Murphy is joined in the film by Robert Downey Jr. as founding commissioner of the US Atomic Energy Commission Lewis Strauss; Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves Jr.; Benny Safdie as theoretical physicist Edward Teller; AND Josh Hartnett as pioneered by American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence. The film is also the protagonist Rami Malek, Gary Oldmann, Michael Angarano, Olivia Thirlby, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, Jason Clarke, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, AND David Dastmalchian.
Oppenheimer will be released in theaters on July 21, 2023.
