Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn offered an explanation of how people come to understand what Groot is saying in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Marvel film is out now on home video and this comes with a director’s commentary which is well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the film.
One of the many little tidbits of information he shared pertains to the moment towards the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 when Gamora can finally understand Groot. Then you also have that beautiful moment where the audience watching the movie can hear what Groot is saying for the first time in the franchise when he says, “I love you guys.” Right there is the magic of the film.
For Gunn, it’s all about the emotional connection between the characters and he explains:
“So, the way Groot’s voice works is there’s some kind of telepathic component to him, so when he says ‘I am Groot’, you have to bond with him, and at some point when you bond with him, You start to understand what he’s saying. In the first film, Rocket obviously understood. In these films now, the rest of the characters have started to understand him as time goes on and they’ve gotten closer.”
I love that and that fans and audiences were going to bond with him alike by the end of the film. My question is…when we see Groot again and hear him speak, will we continue to understand him since he bonded with the fans, or will we go back to just hearing “I am Groot”?
