When the Blue Beetle trailer has been released, there has been some backlash from some DC fans over the “Batman is a fascist” line of dialogue. I could see that the creative team was trying to be funny, but some fans just can’t get around to it.
The line was spoken by George Lopezin the film, Jamie Reyes’ Uncle Rudy, who is obviously not a fan of Batman. Director Angelo Manuel Soto and star Xolo Maridueña they responded to the backlash in an interview with MovieMaker.
Soto explained, “We’ve always wanted to have fun with the way Rudy talks about other superheroes. So to the people who got angry, give us a chance. We’re just trying to have fun with the characters we love. And everyone in our movie loves Batman, Superman and The Flash… And of course, we have critiques of all of them, as we all should. But that doesn’t mean we hate Batman. We love Batman.
Maridueña went on to add, “F that! Maybe Jaime and the audience disagree with Rudy, but you can have your say. Alright… If you felt any way about it, that was the point. So I think if you’re okay with it, if you’re not okay with it, it’s been put in there for a reason. And you know, all the people who have their Batman shrines at home can keep them there and they don’t have to worry.
In the end, how Uncle Rudy feels about Batman is just part of his character. Not everyone in the DC universe is a Batman fan! There are even times in DC Comics where Batman has had a fascist subtext included Franco Miller’S The Return of the Dark Knight run. Regardless, the whole thing was meant as a joke.
The film’s story centers on the Blue Beetle, a vigilante who has a beetle grafted onto his spine that gives him extraordinary powers and the ability to emit blue energy. You can see the transformation happen in the trailer, and it’s like family-friendly body horror. Here is the synopsis:
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find home isn’t quite the way he left it. As he tries to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Beetle. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with incredible armor with extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero BLUE BEETLE.
Blue Beetle was directed by Angelo Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The film is also the protagonist Bruna Marquezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillen; AND Susan Sarandon as the villain Victoria Kord.
The film will only be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
