James Gunn offered some new insights into his upcoming DC Studios film Superman: Legacy. She recently revealed on social media that her film won’t include Cark Kent’s childhood origin story. When asked if he would adapt the first pages of the All-Star Superman comics, he explained about his own Bluesky account: “I think we’ve seen enough of its origin in cinema right now!”
Then a young fan volunteered to play a young version of Superman on Instagram, and Gunn replied that there would be “no young Clark” in the film. The director also revealed that he and the composer have already begun developing the score for the new Superman theme.
I’m fine with Gunn skipping Superman’s origin story, it makes sense to skip it. The film will introduce a new version of Superman, who will be played by David Corenswet and will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, driven by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
Corenswet will be joined by Rachel Brosnahan while Lois Lane and Gunn are currently looking to fill out the rest of the cast to play the likes of Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen and members of a superhero team The Authority. The story will involve “Superman joining a world where superheroes already exist.”
What do you think of Gunn skipping Superman’s origin story?
Superman: Legacy will launch the film portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It is expected to begin in early 2024, right on track for its currently scheduled theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
