A live-action movie about Barney the big purple dinosaur has been in development for a few years. I actually forgot it was happening until this recent report surfaced. The film is the protagonist No AND Black Panther star Daniel Kaluyaand according to the Mattel Films executive Kevin McCeon, the film will be more adult oriented and tap into millennial angst. During an interview with The New Yorker, she said:
“We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than perfecting it for kids. It’s truly an adult game. Not that it’s R-rated, but it will focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being in your 30s, growing up with Barney— just the level of disenchantment within the generation”.
Speaking earlier about the film, Kaluuya shared that he thought Barney’s story idea could be heartbreaking as well as timely. He said:
“Barney taught us, ‘I love you, you love me. Won’t you say you love me too?’ It’s one of the first songs I remember, and what happens when it isn’t? I thought it was really heartbreaking. I have no idea why, but it seems to make sense. There seems to be something unexpected that can be touching but upbeat. Most of all right now, I think it’s really, really necessary.”
They are definitely taking the movie in a different direction than I expected, but I have no interest in watching it just yet. But there are a lot of people who grew up on the show who will.
Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films said in an earlier statement, “Working with Daniel Kaluuya will allow us to take an entirely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations. The project will speak to the brand’s nostalgia in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s children.”
David Carrico of Valparaiso Pictures went on to say, “Barney is a dinosaur of our imaginations, and we can’t wait to get ‘I love you, do you love me’ stuck in heads everywhere once again,”
