Here’s an interesting piece of trivia about the movies that James Wan recently shared. It turns out that before Nicolas Cage played Dracula Renfieldhe was set to play the iconic vampire in a scrapped adaptation of the popular video game franchise Castlevania!

Wan was developing an adaptation of Castlevania in 2009, and said at the time, “I’m very fresh on this project, so it’s early stages and I’m still trying to sort things out, but the producers love my vision. I will work on the script with a screenwriter to give it a new twist, different from previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about.

Obviously, the project was unsuccessful, which is a pity. I think Wan would have been great Castlevania movie, and Cage would have been great as Dracula in the movie! Hell, he was so much fun to watch as the Prince of Darkness Renfield! He gave such an enjoyable performance.

Wan recently praised Renfield on social media, and that’s where he revealed he’s in talks with the actor to play the vampire for his live-action adaptation. Cage was destined to play the character!

Hopefully, Cage can continue playing the role as he recently said that he would like to make his own Dracula movie so he can better explore the vampire’s psyche. He said, “You know, there are some minor moments where you can see some of the pathos in Dracula’s eyes. This got me thinking that maybe one day I’d like to try a whole movie where you really understand the psyche of the character. I haven’t really had the time to delve into this here.

Cage has previously explained that he took on the role of Dracula as a challenge to himself and because he’s a fan of other takes on the character we’ve seen over the years from the likes of Christopher Lee, Frank Langella, Beautiful Lugosi AND Gary Oldmann. He said: “I also always knew I had to do it at some point. I went back to Christopher Lee, in terms of speaking, but that was really just a starting point. I knew Christopher. I did a little scene with him in “Season of the Witch” and I loved it. We had a lot of great conversations and he reminded me quite a bit of my dad, August. So from that moment on, my father became my main inspiration.”

Would you have liked to see Cage play Dracula in a Castlevania movie?
