Margot Robbie says there has been talk of a sequel to the BARBIE movie

There’s still about a month left until the Oscar-winning director’s release Greta GervigThe live-action version of the classic toy figure Barbie. Gerwig wrote the screenplay for the film with Noah Baumbach, and is defined as a kind of feminist manifesto. Star Ryan Gosling he called it “the best script I’ve ever read”.

With that kind of hype and talent involved in this film, it’s no surprise that there’s already been talk of a possible sequel in its future.

In a recent interview with Time, the film’s star, Margot Robbie, who plays the lead Barbie in the film, was asked about the possibility of a sequel, and she confirmed she’s been in conversations, but nothing has been decided. “She could go a million different directions from this point,” she says. “But I think you fall into a trap if you try to create a first film while also planning sequels.”

It’s smart that even as the studio is lobbying to start talks about a sequel, the filmmakers are focused on the success of the first film. The story has to be solid for anyone to care about the first film, and it seems Barbie is about to leave its mark.

Barbie will be released in theaters on July 21.
