SECRET INVASION Star Cobie Smulders Talks Her Shocking Arc and Maria Hill’s Future in the MCU

If you haven’t seen the first episode of Secret invasion, this article enters spoiler territory. The first episode was quite good and set up an interesting story, now let’s see if that story unfolds well.

There were some interesting twists and turns throughout the first episode and it’s over Cobie Smulder’ Maria Hill is shot and appears to die. When it happened, I can’t say I was surprised because something tragic had to happen Samuel L.JacksonIt’s Nick Fury who sets it in motion and makes it personal. Now we know why he’s making it his personal mission to take down the Skrulls.

During a recent interview with Variety, Smulders opened up about her character, the shocking ending to her story, and what the future might hold for Maria Hill.

When asked about any advance warnings she received about being killed, she said:

“I knew it from the beginning, from the first call from [Marvel co-president] Louis D’Esposito. He’s got to be the one calling people, I guess — he’s always been calling me — to say, “Do you want to come and be in ‘Spider Man’?” The best job on the planet, I think, for him, to be the bearer of such good news, even when the news means, “We’re thinking about getting Maria Hill shot and…” – potentially dead, who knows? Who understands this world? There is a multiverse. So I’ve known for years now that this was how the story was going to end. It was a wonderful ride. I’m so glad nothing was spoiled. I can not believe it. Even talking about it out loud feels like I’m doing something wrong.

The actress is then asked if she thinks Hill is really dead. In response to this, she said:

“I mean, does this feel like the end? But it’s such a huge, complicated, multiverse world that Marvel lives in. So I suppose anything is possible. This is all above my access level, so I don’t know. Her death pushed the story in a much more vulnerable direction for the rest of the show’s characters. It’s certainly upping the ante and setting Fury up to be in a very emotional state. Hopefully it has been accomplished.

It sounds like Maria Hill is a character Marvel could be keeping dead, but who knows? Anything is possible, especially with the whole multiverse thing. Now no one can really stay dead. When mentioning to Hill that she cannot be explored further due to her possible death, Smulders said:

“Yeah, her backstory wasn’t really explored on camera, but she was alive to me, you know! I was very excited to have these moments in “Secret Invasion” between Nick Fury’s characters and Maria Hill, where we can see the level of their relationship, how deep that connection is. Being able to say, “You can’t do this job” to Nick Fury is, one, terrifying, and two, it’s because of this level of intimacy that these characters have. So it was really exciting to be emotionally in a more playful space instead of focusing on the action. So yeah, I mean, again, his life was very much alive to me. But there are many characters in this world and there are many stories to tell. So I’m happy with the opportunities I’ve had to be a part of many, many productions. I was very, very, very, very lucky.”

She then shares some things about Maria Hill that she wants fans to know they’ve never seen about the character, saying:

“This is a woman who’s about her career and her job and she’s really made this decision to put her life on the line. I feel like there hasn’t been a lot of surveys in terms of people coming back from the Blip. What kind of emotional toll is there? I think in Maria’s case, she’s completely buried in work, and she always puts that before any relationship, any kind of personal time. I don’t mean that she has a family. I mean, she has, you know, parents and siblings, but I don’t think she has a family of her own. She is a very deep and complicated woman, but she has given up her own life for the protection of others. I think it takes a very strong, compassionate and passionate person to do that.

Were you surprised to see Maria Hill killed in Secret Invasion? Do you think she’s really dead? If so, what are your thoughts on the slain character?
