Quentin Tarantino he is currently preparing to shoot his latest film project The film critic, and kept the main story details to himself. But she offered little nuggets of information to keep things interesting.
One of the more recent nuggets he shared was during an interview with French publication Liberation, in which he compared his film Martin Scorsese’S Taxi driver. He explained how to describe The film criticstarring as “Travis Bickle if he were a film critic”, referring to the character of the taxi driver who Robert DeNiro starred in the film.
In Taxi driver, Travis is a mentally unstable Vietnam veteran who suffers from insomnia. He ends up taking a job driving a cab in New York City, and as he drives at night, he becomes increasingly detached from reality as he dreams of cleaning up the city. When Travis meets pretty campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), becomes obsessed with saving the world, first plotting to assassinate a presidential candidate, then turning his attentions to rescuing 12-year-old prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster).
When previously speaking of Taxi driverTarantino said, “One of the things about Taxi driver [is] which is so magnificent. I actually feel like it might be the greatest first-person character study ever done for a film. I mean, I actually can’t even think of a second, or a third or a fourth that would conflict with it.
He added, “Scorsese, at this point in his career, had a connection to filmmaking and no matter how dark the material, there was such an exuberance in filmmaking that I don’t know if anyone will ever have enough films that he had in the ’00s.” 70s through the 80s”.
So, it makes sense that the film would have had a strong influence on his next project. Previously speaking about the lead character in The Movie Critic, Tarantino revealed that he got his inspiration from a real movie critic writing for a dirty magazine.
The film critic is set in California in 1977 “and is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he was writing movie reviews for some porn rag”. He went on to explain, “He wrote about mainstream films and was the second-series critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was cynical as hell. His reviews were a cross between early Howard Stern and Travis Bickle’s [Robert DeNiro’s character in Taxi Driver] it could be if he was a film critic.
She added, “Think of Travis’ journal entries. But the porn critic was very, very funny. He was very rude, you know. He swore. He used racial slurs. But the shit about him was really funny. He was rude as hell. He wrote as if he were 55, but he was only in his mid-30s. He died in his late thirties. It wasn’t clear for a while, but now I’ve done some more research and I think it was complications from alcoholism.”
This is going to be an interesting film, and since this will be Tarantino’s last film, I really hope it knocks it out of the park.
